Dorset and the Sea
Watercolour by Hetty Rogers. Given to Thomas Hardy by the artist in 1903. The lonely heathland was used by smugglers to transport goods inland and sometimes to hide their cargo. Thomas Hardy’s grandfather allowed his cottage at Bockhampton to be used as a hiding place. ‘The Distracted Preacher’, a smuggling story by Hardy, is based on events at the village of Owermoigne.
